Discussion:
Buck Rogers (80s series)

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century with Gil Gerard and Erin Gray would
probably fall into that category. The theatrical release of the movie was
good but the series went downhill after season 1.
That was probably related to pain on the part of most of the actors as every
time they brushed against Ms. Gray they got splinters.
The first episode after the pilot actually includes Ms Gray's
replacement... didn't happen.

The first season wasn't great but was better than season to.

And the costume designer seemed to be testing the limits of what he
could get away with on TV.

The comics had Wilma wearing skimpy clothing, which is probably why I was
no longer allowed to read them when I was a boy.
I think this was my first introduction to SF.

It suffered from the same stupid management decisions as Battlestar
Galactica - in fact it was probably the same stupid management people.
Both shows completely "jumped the shark" for their second season with lots
of idiotic changes, which unsurprisingly failed spectacularly and were
then cancelled. :-(

The problem I see with that theory is that the kind of radical changes
you are talking about are usually the result of bad ratings. Networks
or production companies demand them in an attempt to save an already
failing show. Such changes rarely work though and fans tend to blame
the changes for the show's cancellation rather than seeing them as
attempts to stave off cancellation.

Not always true. The morons in management are never satisfied with the
number of viewers and often make silly decisions that make no sense
whatsoever.

They also change shows or move them to ridiculous timeslots on purpose so
that the ratings do decline and they can get rid of them, often to be
replaced with cheaper "reality" rubbish.

For example:
Here in New Zealand the TVNZ network plays a British soap opera called
"Coronation Street" (one of that networks highest rating shows and one of
the longest running shows on TV in the world) that has played in the
7:30pm timslot on Tuesdays and Thursdays (and Fridays during the summer)
for many, many years. For some idiotic and incomprehensible reason the
morons in charge decided to move the show to a 5:30pm timeslot, swapping
it with a silly Masterchef show that had less than half the supposed
ratings.

After many silly excuses and non-sensicle "reasons", numerous complaints
from the soap's fans, and the fact that (surprise) the ratings for that
timeslot dropped through the floor, they eventually moved the show back to
7:30pm on Thursdays and Fridays ... meanwhile te 7:30pm timeslot on other
nights have re-runs (some re-runs of re-runs). :-\

Supposedly the show was moved to save it being interrupted by Rugby World
Cup coverage (which was never in that timeslot anyway) and New Zealand
Government Election coverage (which was only once or twice in that
timeslot). One of the reasons theorised by the newspaper "experts" was
that they were really trying to get rid of the show because it's one of
their most expensive.

More likely it was simply some management moron trying to prove how
"clever" they are to justify their obscene salary ... and failing
miserably as usual.

LOL

I think this subject is rather old ??; ISTR I wrote that paragraph about
"no longer being allowed to read them" & the SF bit.

Buck Rogers was indeed my first introduction to SF, and I had a sort of
foster uncle bring the comics to me whilst I was at boarding school.

At one time I would have liked to have read all the comics featuring Buck
Rogers. Now I would not have the time.

In recent years Gil Gerard and Erin Gray came to a convention in Melbourne
(Australia). Gil was a big affable man who looked nothing like he used to,
Erin looked just the same as she used to!!!
I looked them up on the internet, and discovered Erin was a nudist, so
wearing a skimpy costume would probably not have worried her at all.

Gil also revealed that he was terrible at mathematics. He had the original
shows on DVD, as nobody at that time was interested, and his conversion of
US prices to Australian prices left him with an astonishing profit.

I like what Lister has to say about Wilma:

"Sure. I'd do Betty, but I'd be thinking about Wilma."
