A bunch of new sci-fi/fantasy/horror/weird type shows are starting in the US
this year... nothing in the way of space-oriented sci-fi though.

1. Nikita (started 9/09):

A new La Femme Nikita series. Never really got into the first one, but I'll
probably check this out (haven't got around to it yet)

2. The Event (20/09):

Looks like a conspiracy based sci-fi. In the preview, they're trying to
create a lot of hype with the question, "What is the Event?," but for some
reason it makes be think of Gabbo.

3. Undercovers (22/09):

JJ Abrams husband/wife spy-fi. Have to say, the clip doesn't really grab me.

4. No Ordinary Family (28/10):

A family of super-heroes, starring Michael Chiklis (The Thing from Fantastic
4,) and Julie Benz (there is life after Dexter!) Super-heroes seem all the
rage at the moment. This one looks more light entertainment than dark and
mysterious (for that, see The Cape)

5. The Walking Dead (31/10):

Zombie TV series... I guess vampires have been done too much already. Might
be interesting though - a series should have more scope than a mere zombie
slasher movie.

6. The Cape (early 2011):

Another super-hero series. Looks good. Has Summer Glau in it... I think she
just likes getting invites to conventions! I'm glad the hero has to leave
his family, because the cheesiness of that part of the preview had me
gagging.

7. The Gates (20/06):

Quiet suburb with a vampire problem (been out since June)

8. Haven (9/07):

Based on Stephen King story: "A shrewd FBI agent with a lost past who
arrives in the small town of Haven, Maine, to solve the murder of a local
ex-con only to discover that the curious enclave is a longtime refuge for
people with supernatural powers that holds a lot of secrets, including to
her own past."

9. Betwixt (some time in 2011):

Based on the book by same name: "When three teens, each haunted by uncanny
happenings, receive invitations to a top-secret summer solstice celebration,
they expect a typical Portland rave. Instead, they find an elaborate ritual
staged to inform them about a secret, powerful nonhuman race to which they
actually belong..."

10. Game of Thrones (2011):

New Fantasy series starring Sean Bean.

Many thanks for the info, most of it new to me.

However, this new "Nikita" seems much more inferior, but it may improve.

Apparently the cast do not know what is going on, and the members of the

I'm still annoyed at FlashForward being axed, though having watched, it
seems that this was also made up as it went along. It had a very
interesting/grabbing beginning (though with with some faults), got pretty
bland in the middle, then improved slightly at the end (but not enough). It
was still better than V though, IMO - which got renewed (despite missing the
Nazi uniforms and rat-munching of the original - which as an 8-year old,
were the best parts)

I was also upset by FlashForward being axed.

I did not like the original V, tho I watched it all.
Accordingly, I did not watch the new V.

I liked the original. In the original "V" was the symbol used by the
rebellion against the aliens. V for Victory.

In the new show, 10 minutes in the instory news are painfully calling
the aliens "Vees".

Ah, I see you changed what you wrote before. It makes sense now.

"V" stands for the plural (visitors) as much as it does for the singular
(visitor).

That said, I'm not sure why season 2's plan couldn't have finished in

The problem is that they aren't made up as they go along while they hook
in the viewers. They run out of ideas but still trade on how they
hooked viewers in the first place.
It's really what started with a show like Twin Peaks, pretending
something is going on and not ending story lines in an episode.
I've almost never seen The Prisoner but I saw a bit of a 1960s episode
and it shared such similar qualities, but something is very different,
perhaps stories end in an episode even though the mystery goes on.

If they just advertise The Event with 'What is The Event?' it's enough
to convince me what it is I'm so jaded.

I miss Reaper. There was no good reason to end the show after 2 seasons.

Or maybe they were made up all along and the ideas were better at the
beginning.
Or the whole thing was planned and the better ideas were at the
beginning.

Twin Peaks just being weird and soapy. They were forced to end the
Laura Palmer thing and the explanation just didn't make sense.

Every episode is based around an escape plan ends with #6's plan
failing. The last 2 episodes are a double, with a sudden, stupid,
obvious reveal of the big question.

Yeah - Heroes seemed to have a story planned out for first season
(at least, the broad strokes,) but then had no idea where to go after that.

I think one of the reason FlashForward failed is they wen t a bit wobbly
in the middle and never recovered - again, because they didn't have
the storyline planned as they pretended.

It starts out like Chuck meets Dead Like Me but gets better.

I did see Season one of True Blood but have successfully avoided the next

I've avoided Vamp Diaries... I heard it was a series version of Twilight,
and I hated that moviw with a passion... quite possibly the most boring
vampire movie in the history of movies... or vampires! Vampires are
suffering a severe case of "Badass Decay":

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadassDecay

I especially like the first quote from the above link:

"I was once a badass vampire. But love, and a pesky curse, defanged me. Now
I'm just a big fluffy puppy with bad teeth."
- Spike, ironically, referring to Angel

Ironic indeed, given what Spike became.
Post by David Barnett
I think I'll also avoid Zombie stories - The Walking Dead
That show actually looks pretty good. It's based on a comic series. Zombie
slasher movies are pretty boring by nature ("slash your way to the safe
haven" type stortylines,) but this sounds like it has more to it. Plus, if
you haven't watched the youtube preview, it's worth it, just for the cool
soundtrack :)

Indeed... There are 7 books in the series, and they are hoping to do 7

true.

Now that you mention it... though as it's based on a book, it may have more
of a planned storytline to follow. Though, in saing that, I might be better
off reading the book.

Undercovers doesn't do much for me... I'm most excited about The Cape, to be
honest - though NOF looks like some good light entertainment (whicb I'm
always keen to watch inbetween the darker sci-fi I'm really into)

I've avoided Vamp Diaries... I heard it was a series version of Twilight,
and I hated that moviw with a passion... quite possibly the most boring
vampire movie in the history of movies... or vampires! Vampires are

Well I like Sean Bean, but TG it is 2011, as I have too much to watch as
it is.
Indeed... There are 7 books in the series, and they are hoping to do 7
seasons... Did they really secure Sean Bean for 7 seasons? Interesting, if
true.

Sounds like Roswell!
Now that you mention it... though as it's based on a book, it may have
more of a planned storytline to follow. Though, in saing that, I might be
better off reading the book.

The Cape, No Ordinary Family & Undercovers sound interesting, but will
wait till I've seen some reviews.
Undercovers doesn't do much for me... I'm most excited about The Cape, to
be honest - though NOF looks like some good light entertainment (whicb I'm
always keen to watch inbetween the darker sci-fi I'm really into)
Haven is not a great show, but I like Nicholas Campbell (Da Vinci's
Inquest).
However he does not get much air time.
I like looking at Emily Rose, the lead actress.
US posters think the 10th episode was a good one.

IMHO very much like X\-files, but with minimal arc.
That is, MOTW episodes.

I hate M (or any letter) OTW shows. Not everything has to be
decompressed storytelling, ongoing plot heavy, but MOTW is pretty
boring.

This is I think why shows like Eureka, Burn Notice and Warehouse 13 do
reasonably well - they have xOTW stories, sure, but weaving through a
B-story every week is the continuing plot to do with the characters and
what they are trying to achieve. Plus they're all fairly lighthearted
shows with moments of humour in amongst the sci-fi/spy drama which makes
them easy to watch, and quite fun.

If the show is a serious drama with a conspiracy or something, then it
tends to fall into the continuing plot type, which fans like but casual
viewers (and network execs) don't, because it's hard to know what's
going on if you miss an episode. Light, xOTW-type shows don't suffer
from this problem, so they can have serious and casual viewers, and pick
up more viewers as the series continues.

The xOTW it what makes Eureka boring, I don't watch Burn Notice, and
the first half hour of W13 was so cliche I gave up.

Obviously I can only speak about Eureka, but the ongoing plot is
incredibly weak. Not much stronger than the old will-they-won't-they
in sitcoms when they used to reset at the end of every episode.

Network execs don't like it because of the casual viewers and any time
they move an episode to improve ratings (better episodes earlier to
hook casual viewers and make them fans, etc. The sort of things they
did to improve Firefly's ratings and got burnt for.)

Agreed. However, they have less fans who will stick with the show and
keep the ratings week to week. A casual fan is a ratings point this
week. They may not be back next week.

A show needs to build a solid fanbase and attract casual viewers.
Aiming for one group over the other is dangerous.

Buffy was a major step in the laming up of vampires.

I think it's more post-zombie apocalypse survival than zombie film...
but of course, they'd be zombies.

I thought the books each covered a different generation... so more

They might not need him for 7 seasons. Apart from anything else its
highly doubtful Martin will ever finish the series.

I've seen an advance copy of NOF and its pretty good, like Heroes but
much lighter and family based.

Never finish Jordan-Wheel-Of-Time style.
Or never finish Scott-Pilgrim, last comic not published until movie in
post-production?

Jordan style. He's clearly in a high risk category for heart disease,
takes ages to write anything to do with ASOIAF and gets too easily
distracted by other projects.

I'd say good but thats a matter of opinion cause its no masterpiece.

A bunch of new sci-fi/fantasy/horror/weird type shows are starting in the US
this year... nothing in the way of space-oriented sci-fi though.
1. Nikita (started http://youtu.be/UVZfGnbt-9s
A new La Femme Nikita series. Never really got into the first one, but I'll
probably check this out (haven't got around to it yet)
Yet another spy-chick series. yawn.
Post by Fleeced
2. The Event http://youtu.be/j4vumb8J-x8
Looks like a conspiracy based sci-fi. In the preview, they're trying to
create a lot of hype with the question, "What is the Event?," but for some
reason it makes be think of Gabbo.
The words "The Event" don't excite me another to care. If they're
using this sort of marketing the need to have a more interesting name.
Post by Fleeced
3. Undercovers http://youtu.be/SIDRG1edDpg
JJ Abrams husband/wife spy-fi. Have to say, the clip doesn't really grab me.
Mr & Mrs Smith by the guy who did Alias. yawn.
Post by Fleeced
4. No Ordinary Family http://youtu.be/NbBplfoXBbY
A family of super-heroes, starring Michael Chiklis (The Thing from Fantastic
4,) and Julie Benz (there is life after Dexter!) Super-heroes seem all the
rage at the moment. This one looks more light entertainment than dark and
mysterious (for that, see The Cape)
I'll give it a look but I can't see it being that great.
Post by Fleeced
5. The Walking Dead http://youtu.be/yg46DWI_fCE
Zombie TV series... I guess vampires have been done too much already. Might
be interesting though - a series should have more scope than a mere zombie
slasher movie.
The comic book it is based on is meant to be pretty interesting,
waiting for this one.
Post by Fleeced
6. The Cape (early http://youtu.be/PYfJSZZpia0
Another super-hero series. Looks good. Has Summer Glau in it... I think she
just likes getting invites to conventions! I'm glad the hero has to leave
his family, because the cheesiness of that part of the preview had me
gagging.
It's the other way around. Once you're popular at conventions the
makers will put you in their show (Look Whedon & Terminator fans it's
Summer Glau). I wonder if she'll be naked in this pilot, too.
Post by Fleeced
7. The Gates http://youtu.be/fbqRa_cuXes
Quiet suburb with a vampire problem (been out since June)
Worthwhile vampires?
Post by Fleeced
Based on Stephen King story: "A shrewd FBI agent with a lost past who
arrives in the small town of Haven, Maine, to solve the murder of a local
ex-con only to discover that the curious enclave is a longtime refuge for
people with supernatural powers that holds a lot of secrets, including to
her own past."
As a Stephen King story it sounds interesting. As a TV show is sounds
a bit samey.
Post by Fleeced
Based on the book by same name: "When three teens, each haunted by uncanny
happenings, receive invitations to a top-secret summer solstice celebration,
they expect a typical Portland rave. Instead, they find an elaborate ritual
staged to inform them about a secret, powerful nonhuman race to which they
actually belong..."
The Republican Party?
Post by Fleeced
New Fantasy series starring Sean Bean.
Have been looking forward to this for some time.
